3G Development in China January 4-10

- China Mobile recently unveiled the results of its TD-LTE (Time Division-Long Term Evolution) data card and equipment joint tender for the imminent World Expo 2010 Shanghai, to be opened on May 1, 2010, the China Business News reported on January 6. Winners of the tender included Alcatel-Lucent Shanghai Bell, Motorola China, and Chinese CMMB (China Mobile Multimedia Broadcasting) chip maker Innofidei. Huawei and ZTE had participated in the tender but were unsuccessful.

 

China Mobile recently also confirmed that the company has begun trial runs for a small-scale network based on TD-LTE and plans to launch a commercial trial TD-SCDMA network during the World Expo. This commercial trial network is expected to cover an area of 5.28 square kilometers, offering a maximum downlink speed of 29Mbps. In addition, China Mobile has selected Huawei, Motorola, ZTE and Alcatel-Lucent as suppliers for the TD-LTE trial commercial network. Furthermore, China Mobile plans to kick off the deployment of over 100 TD-LTE base stations in several selected cities.

 

Meanwhile, Beijing Mobile, a subsidiary of China Mobile in Beijing, recently announced that the company has selected Nokia Siemens Networks to set up the its TD-CDMA (Time Division-Code Division Multiple Access) network, according to another report by the Chinese Business News on January 7. Under the agreement signed between these two companies, Nokia Siemens Networks will provide TD-SCDMA ratio and core network solutions, along with the relevant services, for Beijing Mobile to improve its 3G network coverage and ensure smooth network migration to TD-LTE. Nokia Siemens Networks, however, did not reveal the value of the deal.
